Early this morning a 29-year-old Florida man with an explosive device strapped to his chest, an automatic weapon and a handgun walked into an Orlando nightclub frequented by the LGBT community and proceeded to conduct what some have called “the worst mass shooting in the history of the United States.”
Via NBC News:
Officials said a hostage situation developed after the gunman stormed the Pulse Nightclub about 2 a.m.
The shooter was identified by several law enforcement sources as Omar Mateen, 29.
He was shot dead about three hours later when a SWAT team entered the club, police said. A handgun and AR-15-type rifle were recovered at the scene, according to police.
The law enforcement sources told NBC News that Mateen was born in New York in 1986 and was listed as living at a residence in Port St. Lucie, about 125 miles south of Orlando.
Mateen had active security officer and firearm licenses, according to Florida records, and his family said he worked in security. Marriage records show he was married in Port St. Lucie in 2009, and a relative said he had a 3-year-old son.
The incident is being investigated as an act of terrorism, officials said.
Mir Seddique, Mateen’s father told NBC News, “this has nothing to do with religion.” Seddique said his son got angry when he saw two men kissing in Miami a couple of months ago and thinks that may be related to the shooting.
“We are saying we are apologizing for the whole incident. We weren’t aware of any action he is taking. We are in shock like the whole country,” Seddique said. Read More…
Law enforcement officials told ABC News that Mateen’s parents were born in Afghanistan, and he was “on the radar” of U.S. officials for some time, but was not the target of a specific investigation.
Also a public records search shows that he has been a registered Democrat for the last nine years.
So of course this must be the fault of those crazy gun totin,’ bible thumpin’ Christian Conservatives. At least that is what those on the left and many in the media will try to say in the next few days as they call for gun control.
The question I ask is, how would have “stricter gun laws” stopped this? Mateen was a licensed security guard.
It was not a “gun,” or a crazy Christian Conservative gun nut that massacred 49 people in Orlando and injured 53 more.
It was not the NRA or the 2nd Amendment.
It was a registered Democrat, with a bomb strapped to his chest, who held sympathetic beliefs to Islamic Terrorism and whose parents were originally from Afghanistan.
Donald Trump and his supporters will take this as an opportunity to ramp up their xenophobia, Hillary Clinton and her supporters will use this as an opportunity to ramp up their anti-second Amendment rhetoric.
That being said, it’s not the fault of Democrats, nor is it the fault of Republicans.
It’s not the fault of “guns,” its not even the fault of “all Muslims.”
Its the fault of evil.
I don’t know what the solution is, but what I do know is that the rights of free people should not be taken away because of the acts of cowards with evil in their hearts.
A while back I posted a story about a group of young Iranian fans of Pharrell Williams, who were sentenced to jail time & 91 lashes for making their own video of the American pop star’s hit song “Happy.”
Apparently in Iran if you have better taste in music and are a fan of heavy metal or more so if you play in a heavy metal band — the punishment is far worse.
According to a message received by Metal Nation Radio, two members of Iranian metal band, Confess, have been arrested by the Army of the Guardians of the Islamic Revolution and have been held in Iran’s notorious Evin prison since November of last year until their release earlier this month after posting bail.
According to Fox News:
“Beatings, torture, mock executions and brutal interrogations are the norm at Evin prison, where for four decades the anguished cries of prisoners have been swallowed up by the drab walls of the low-slung lockup in northwestern Tehran. Standing at the foot of the Alborz Mountains, it is home to an estimated 15,000 inmates, including killers, thieves and rapists. But the prison has also held ayatollahs, journalists, intellectuals and dissidents over the years…”
During their time in jail the two metalheads were allegedly kept in solitary confinement. They are currently facing charges of blasphemy, advertising against the system, forming and running an illegal and underground band and recording label in a musical genre considered to be Satanic, writing lyrics that are anti-religious, atheistic, political, and anarchistic and granting interviews to forbidden foreign radio stations.
They are facing jail time from six months to six years or even worse could face the death-penalty if found guilty of the charge of blasphemy.
If there ever was a country in dire need of a cultural & political revolution its the Islamic Republic of Iran.
It looks like the morality police over at our moderate & westernized “allies” in Saudi Arabia have struck again. The Saudi Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice raided a private property in the city of Buraydah, arresting the men inside for “loud music and inappropriate dancing.”
Via The UK Daily Mail:
The men were celebrating one of the group’s birthdays when police stormed the apartment they were in in the city of Buraydah in Qassim province.
Officers of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, commonly referred to as the morality police, were acting on a tip off, local media reported.
Buraydah is home to some of the kingdom’s most conservative clerics with many residents observing Wahhabism, a strict interpretation of Islam.
An unnamed official told the news website Ayn al-Youm the men were found ‘in a compromising situation’ by police.
There was cake and candles at the apartment, he added, but there were no signs the men had been drinking or cavorting with women which are both against the law.
None of the men were dressed traditionally, he said, before urging parents in the area to prevent their children from engaging in such behaviour ‘because it can lead to immorality and even homosexuality’. Read More…
I bet you if the noise complaints came from the sound of screams as the men were beating their wives, they’d have no problem with it.
Apparently a woman was photographed recently walking down the streets of Kabul, Afghanistan with a little bit of leg showing and it sent the whole country into an uproar.
Via The BBC:
A woman walking through the streets in a mid-length dress is nothing shocking in most cities in the world.
But a recent photo of exactly that has spread widely – because it was taken in Kabul, Afghanistan.
“I was shocked,” says the man who snapped the photo, local journalist Hayat Ensafi. “I knew I had to catch this special moment because I never saw a woman here walking down the streets like this.”
Women face severe restrictions on clothing and movement in Afghanistan. After he took the photo, Ensafi tried to talk to the mystery woman.
“But she walked very fast and didn’t talk to me at all,” he told BBC Trending.
After Hayat posted the photo on Facebook, thousands of people shared and commented on it. Although it’s difficult to tell exactly how many people have seen the photo, and what constitutes an online trend in a country with very low internet usage, the BBC’s Syed Anwar in Kabul says the woman is a huge topic of conversation.
“We have seen thousands of people talk about it,” Anwar says. “Not only on social media but also in the streets people are talking about her, wondering if she is mentally ill or if she is protesting.” Read More…
First and foremost, the fact that this is even a news-worthy story disgusts me. Islam is the worst sickness to ever infect our planet. Secondly, what was the whole point of all the deaths of American soldiers and the billions upon billions of US taxpayer dollars spent if a woman still can’t walk down the streets of Kabul unless she is covered from head to toe in a blanket?
Here in the U.S. so called “feminist’s” like comedian Chelsea Handler are fighting for the right to post topless pictures of themselves on social media, meanwhile in Iran a woman gets a jail sentence for attending a sporting event.
Via The UK Daily Mail:
A British woman arrested in Iran after attending a men’s volleyball match has been jailed for a year.
Ghoncheh Ghavami, 25, was accused of ‘propaganda against the regime’. The London graduate was detained as she and women’s rights campaigners tried to enter the Azadi Stadium in Tehran to watch a volleyball game.
Under Iran’s strict Islamic laws, women are forbidden from mixing with male spectators at sporting events.
She was thrown into solitary confinement in Iran’s notorious Evin political prison and was held for more than 100 days, including 41 days in solitary.
Amnesty International UK Director Kate Allen said: ‘This is an appalling verdict.
‘It’s an outrage that a young woman is being locked up simply for peacefully having her say about how women are discriminated against in Iran.
‘Ghoncheh is a prisoner of conscience and the Iranian authorities should quash the sentence and release her immediately and unconditionally. Read More…
I hope that one day the youth of Iran can break free from the evil that controls their country.
Yesterday afternoon in Audubon, New Jersey, a man covered head to toe in a burqa robbed a bank, marking the third time in four weeks that he has struck. If you think about it, it sort of is the perfect disguise to wear in this day and age — nobody has the balls anymore in our country to risk offending Muslims by asking them to take the ridiculous bed sheets they cover themselves with when walking into high security areas.
Via The South Jersey Times:
Police say the man entered the Beneficial Bank on the 100 block of S. White Horse Pike in Audubon shortly before 2 p.m. Oct. 8 and handed a teller a note demanding cash.
The suspect then fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.
This marks the third such incident to happen in the last four weeks, the first taking place at the Susquehanna Bank on Market Street in Camden on Sept. 17, and the second on Sept. 25 at the Audubon Savings Bank on S. White Horse Pike.
The suspect in all three cases is described as a light-skinned male dressed in a black robe and head covering. Read More…
I am not a big fan of pop music, but as far songs go I have heard far worse then the Pharrell Williams hit “Happy.” Its actually a pretty catchy tune, even if it is mildly annoying. Earlier this past year six young Iranians, using an Iphone 5S, decided to film and upload their own video for the song (as seen above) to social media.
As you can see Elvis Presley & his pelvis thrusting in the 50’s was far more provocative then anything going on in that video. However those ever-so-peaceful practitioners of the ‘Religion of Peace’ that run the Islamic Republic of Iran didn’t think so.
I mean oh my god, the girls heads were not covered up, the horror!
Today the six kids were handed down sentences of 91 lashes and 6 months in prison for “obscene behavior.”
Another defendant who faced ‘heavier charges’ in relation to the video was handed a suspended sentence of one year in jail and 91 lashes by the authorities on Wednesday, the Iran Wire site quoted Farshid Rofugaran as saying.
He was quoted by Iran Wire as saying the verdicts had not been officially communicated to him and so he could not be completely sure about the information he had gathered.
The sentences are suspended for three years, meaning that if any of the seven is found guilty of a similar offense, the punishment is then carried out, he said without elaborating. Read more…
I don’t really want any more American soldiers sent home in pine boxes draped in flags, because our politicians are trying to force democracy upon the Middle East. But at the same time I hope for a world that the worst thing that happens to young people like the six Iranian youth in that video, is they get mocked for listening to crappy music.
Happiness shouldn’t be a crime in any country or any culture.
Bowing to political correctness, and citing “safety concerns” the owner of Sneakers Bistro in Winooski, VT removed an advertisement that read “YIELD FOR BACON,” because a local Muslim resident found the sign offensive.
It got there as part of “Operation Bloom.”
A city program put it in place to keep its flower beds beautiful. If businesses do some gardening they can post an advertisement where they do it, but the word “bacon” on the Sneakers Bistro sign started a discussion about diversity on the Winooski Front Porch Forum.
It started with a post from one woman who wrote that the sign was insensitive to those who do not consume pork. She said as a Muslim she is personally offended by it.
The owners of Sneakers spoke to WPTZ. They say they’ve reached out to the individual who made the post and proactively took the sign down. They also say they regret any harm caused by the sign, and that their goal was never to cause stress or bad feelings. Read More…
On their now deleted Facebook page Sneakers Bistro had this response:
“We are here to serve people BREAKFAST, not politics. We removed the sign that was located on public property as a gesture of respect for our diverse community. There were also concerns raised about safety. Removing it was not a difficult decision. We still love bacon. We still love eggs. Please have the political conversation elsewhere.”
I’m interested to know what these “concerns raised about safety,” were? Did they think that the sign was going to cause potential traffic accidents over cars stopping in the street over the thoughts of wonderful tasty bacon goodness? Or were they concerned about violence over their harmless and amusing ad?
It is a free country, or at least it is supposed to be. Much like I wrote in my post about atheists attacking an Arkansas restaurant for their church bulletin promotion, I believe that in a free society small-business owners should be allowed to run their businesses as they see fit. So they have every right to pull their sign down due to political correctness, I just think that its sad and pathetic.
On a recent trip through the McDonald’s drive thru I received back in change a one-dollar bill that had been defaced with black marks covering up the “In God We Trust” inscription. Now, I myself have been known to occasionally doodle on US currency by either filling in Abe Lincoln’s beard or even tracking the random bill on wheresgeorge.com, the only statement that makes is that I am bored and chose to pass the time by defacing government issued currency.
Just got this back in change in the drive thru. Why do many atheists have to be assholes? pic.twitter.com/u075BxgU0i
— Joecephus (@_joecephus) March 15, 2014
The lone black streaks covering up the inscription on this particular dollar bill really pushed my buttons on that day and it got me thinking, “what kind of statement does that make?” So while I was pulled over to the side waiting for my McChicken to be made, I took a picture of the defaced bill and posted it to twitter with the question, “Why do many atheists have to be assholes?” And I don’t mean the cool kind of Dennis Leary Asshole either.
I received no answers to my question, just a call to get my fingernails manicured and a debate on the Constitutionality of the motto “In God We Trust” being on our currency. The Constitutional question pertaining to the motto is something that I may expound on at a later time, this post is really about my question posed in my tweet.
Why are many atheists assholes?
Notice that the word that I use when asking this question is “many,” not “all” and not even “most.” I have friends who are atheists, there are atheists who I admire. Despite being an admitted Marxist, I count the late author & journalist Christopher Hitchens as well as the libertarian comedian & illusionist Penn Jillette among the vocal atheists whom I respect.
I myself despite being raised a Christian, having been baptized into the Roman Catholic Church, served as an altar boy and briefly even a Parish School of Religion teacher, have some doubts. I am borderline agnostic in that while I think there is some sort of higher power out there and I think that that higher power may possibly be the God outlined in Catholicism, I simply don’t know.
Except where it comes to their interpretation of the Constitution and the intent of our founding fathers, there are some arguments given by certain atheists that not only do I have a hard time disproving, but that I actually agree with.
The problem I have is in the minority, albeit the very vocal minority of, atheists who seem to take great pleasure in denigrating and attacking the belief system of others. Furthermore, not always, but most of the time the same vocal minority of atheists who take pleasure in attacking the beliefs of others seem to target Christianity, but not Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Wicca, Paganism, Satanism, etc. They seem to hate God & Jesus, but ignore “Allah” & Mohammed. Why is this?
It just seems to me very irrational to hate something that you do not believe exists. I don’t believe in the tooth fairy, but I’m not on a mission to openly denigrate and attack parents who teach their children that if you put the small piece of bone that fell out of your mouth under your pillow before you go to bed, a tiny little winged mythical creature is going to come and replace it with money.
The vocal minority of atheists who seem to take pleasure in telling believers that they are stupid most of the time come off just like the douche-bags in the Westboro Baptist Church that take great pleasure in telling gays that they are going to burn in hell — as assholes. Radical hardcore atheism is just as ugly and fanatical often times as radical hardcore religious fanaticism.
I don’t suggest that atheists stop talking about religion or even to stop debating with believers. I just wonder why many of them have to do it in a way that makes them come off as assholes?
The ever-so-tolerant practitioners of the “Religion of Peace” are at it again. Behzad Taalipasand, Mehdi Reza Omidi (Youhan), Mehdi Dadkhah (Danial) and Amir Hatemi (Youhanna), members of the Church of Iran, were sentenced by officials in that country to 80 lashes each. Their crime? Drinking communion wine and possessing a satellite antenna.
The men were sentenced on October 6 and given their verdict on October 20 with ten days to appeal the sentence after breaking the theocracy’s laws.
