Bruce Dickinson and Glenn Hughes: Deep Purple’s “Burn”

September 12, 2014by JoecephusNo Comments

This past April, The Sunflower Jam charity put on a concert, Celebrating Jon Lord at the Royal Albert Hall, a night where some of the world’s biggest names in music came together to honor the life and work of the late, great former Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord.

Bruce-Dickenson-Burn

Jon Lord sadly passed away in 2012. Just a few weeks before the release of the just finished remake of what is universally known as the first ever meeting of classical music and rock. The Concerto For Group and Orchestra. The same composition that Purple played live in 1969 at the Royal Albert Hall.

Considering the amount of respect, friendship and love expressed on any occasion by anybody who had worked, played or simply met Jon Lord, it is not a surprise that the 2014 Jam would be dedicated totally to his music. The night turned out to be a historical moment in rock music: A full orchestra, a director – Paul Mann – crazy enough to give wonderful arrangements to a repertoire going back and forth through fifty years of music, many old friends for an unforgettable night.

The Albert Hall sold out to the last seat…

Jon’s big musical loves were in the room, once again: same venue, many years later, many of the same people involved, a million times more the amount of emotions.

For four hours Jon’s music was shining. Commotion, jokes, laughs and a lot of music came together by magic.

The result is the show you can now hear and watch.

The concert will be released on September 26th and will be available on Blu-ray, CD and digital download formats. Divided into three sets, with the third devoted to a performance from the current Deep Purple (Mark VIII) lineup.

The above clip is legendary Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson & Deep Purple Mark III bass player and vocalist Glen Hughes performing the Deep Purple classic “Burn.”

Identical twins Camille and Kennerly Kitt, collectively known as The Harp Twins, have released a video for their cover of the Ozzy Osbourne classic “Crazy Train.”

The duo, according to their website, are “the world’s only identical twin professional harpists, Camille and Kennerly have a passion and flair for arranging and performing contemporary music for Harp Duet. The twins were trained classically but their true musical love and passion is playing rock, metal, alternative, and crossover genres.”

They’re not too bad to look at either.

RIP Jon Lord

July 16, 2012by JoecephusNo Comments

Jon Lord, one of the founding members of the legendary Deep Purple (whom by the way it’s a shear travesty that they are not Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees) has lost his battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

Jon Lord 1941 – 2012

“Jon Lord, the legendary keyboard player with DEEP PURPLE co-wrote many of the bands legendary songs including ‘Smoke On The Water’ and played with many bands and musicians throughout his career.”It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Jon Lord, who suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism today, Monday, July 16th at the London Clinic, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Jon was surrounded by his loving family.

Best known for his orchestral work Concerto For Group & Orchestra first performed at Royal Albert Hall with DEEP PURPLE and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1969 and conducted by the renowned Malcolm Arnold, a feat repeated in 1999 when it was again performed at the Royal Albert Hall by the London Symphony Orchestra and DEEP PURPLE.

“Jon’s solo work was universally acclaimed when he eventually retired from DEEP PURPLE in 2002.”

In addition to DEEP PURPLE, Lord played in WHITESNAKE — the band led by ex-PURPLE singer David Coverdale — from 1978 to 1984, having appeared on the albums “Trouble”, “Lovehunter”, “Ready An’ Willing”, “Come An’ Get It”, “Saints & Sinners” and “Slide It In”.

Jon Lord is survived by his wife Vickie and two daughters — Amy and Sara.
