Cigar Review: Man O’ War Virtue

May 5, 2014by JoecephusNo Comments

I have been tossing around the idea of starting another blog devoted to reviewing various craft beers and cigars, however since I hardly post all that much on this one I changed my mind for the time being. So mixed in with the various videos, pics I find funny and random political posts I’ll just insert some other content from time to time.

I am relatively new to the hobby of cigar smoking a little less than a decade ago I bought a bunch of cigars online from Thompson Cigar, they were cheap and crappy and I didn’t have a humidor or had really even known that I had needed one. I kept them in my desk drawers, they got dried out and crappy and eventually I ended up tossing them out.

I used to be a heavy chain-smoker of cigarettes, but gave up that nasty habit about 3 and a half years ago now. I know there are those that will say that cigar smoking is not that different, I’m not going to debate that here, other than to say if you don’t have some vices in your life, what’s the point?

I’m not going to use a rating system, no stars or anything like that, just give my thoughts about the various cigars or craft beers that I enjoy.

So here it goes.

Man O’ War Virtue Toro 6″ x 50

Purchased online as part of the CI’s Kitchen Sink Mega-Sampler from Cigar’s International.

This is a light smoke, being a relative noob when it comes to the enjoyment of fine cigars, I still have a soft spot in my heart for things such as infused cigars (of which this is not) and of light easy-smoking sticks (of which this is.)

It is a well made, well rolled cigar (however still be a noob I’m not 100% sure on what all the best qualities you want to look for in that aspect, it looks like a very well crafted stick to my relatively young eyes). I really dig the label with the Spartan helmet, it’s very bad ass looking.

The pre-burn aroma on this cigar is very light and woody, with almost a barnyard aroma and just a very light hint of peperryness. Rather then using my steel twin blade cutter, I used a hole punch-cutter. On cold draw it is very much the same as the overall unlit aroma.

Once lit, the initial draw was light and creamy, a little woody just a touch of a peppery flavor. I sensed a bit of sweetness while into the first third of the stick that continued throughout the entire smoking experience. At first I attributed this to an aftertaste from the ginger ale that I was drinking while enjoying it, but after some thought I am certain that the sweetness comes from the cigar itself.

Into the middle of the stick the flavor profile didn’t really change all that much. It stayed pretty consistent, light and creamy with a hint of pepper and sweetness. I could easily see how fans of stronger full-bodied cigars and fans of A.J. Fernandez’s other creations could be disappointed in this smoke. I am not, but as I said I do like a good light cigar.

There are so many good light, Connecticut-wrapped cigars out there as well as a lot of other better cigars from A.J. Fernandez, including others in the Man O’ War line, that while I don’t think I would ever specifically seek this one out again and buy it on its own, I would not be disappointed if offered it or if it came bundled in another sampler pack purchased.

If you’re not the type of cigar lover that turns your nose at a light smoke, I would give this one a try.
